Sambuca di Sicilia stands in the hills of the Belice area in the province of Agrigento. The settlement developed from Zabut, founded during the Islamic period, and its Arab heritage remains visible in the compact Saracen quarter and its network of narrow lanes.

Later expansion added churches, palazzi, theatres and broad streets, creating an unusual combination of Islamic urban form and Baroque architecture. Sambuca was named Italy’s Borgo dei Borghi in 2016 and continues to receive regional recognition as one of Sicily’s leading historic villages.
